Barb Pitchford

Barb Pitchford is a Senior Professional Development Associate with The Leadership and Learning Center. She has been active in school reform for more than thirty-five years and lives by the credo “possibilities not problems” when working with schools. As a veteran principal at all three levels (elementary, middle, and high school), Barb has developed keen insights into how to create systemic change at both the building and district levels. Knowing that dynamic instructional leadership is foundational to the change process, Barb has developed strategies to initiate and sustain effective and efficient research-based practices at all levels.

Barb’s school district was one of 12 districts nationwide to be chosen to participate in the ASCD’s (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) consortium on early childhood education which identified best practices in early education. Moreover, her school received the John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award several years running. She has become a passionate coach and consultant to principals, understanding the multiple demands, guiding the change process, and sharing the belief that in the field of education, leaders must be the lead learners.

Barb is a long-time resident of Aspen, Colorado who now enjoys walking up mountains more than skiing down them. Raised on a horse ranch in Oregon, she is an outdoor enthusiast who spends most of her free time riding her horse, hiking, road biking, and attempting to golf.

What Clients Say

“Very well done and professionally delivered.  Barb knows school data and how to apply it to student learning.”

“Even though the audience did not volunteer to attend and even though there could have been resentments on the teachers’ part… The presenters (Barb Pitchford, Juan Cordova, and Lynn Howard) won everyone over and provided excellent, relevant training!  The teachers knew they could take this information back to their classrooms and use it!”
