Thommie Piercy is a Professional Development Associate for The Leadership and Learning Center. In this role, she provides professional development for districts and schools, designs seminars, and authors publications and articles. Dr. Piercy’s experiences include earning her Ph.D. at the University of Maryland and teaching graduate courses. She was the preK-Grade 12 Supervisor for Reading for her district of over 28,000 students outside of Baltimore, Maryland through 2011. During her leadership role, her district became Maryland’s highest performing district in Reading. Dr. Piercy’s research received the Reading Research Award from the State of Maryland International Reading Association. She was bestowed the Bailor Award for her Distinguised Career in Education from McDaniel College. Dr. Piercy was the chair of Not My Kid, and was awarded the Hero’s Award by CASA.
Thommie is the author of Compelling Conversations: Connecting Leadership to Achievement, Advanced Learning Press (2006). She co-authored Disciplinary Literacy: Redefining Deep Understanding and Leadership for the 21st Century, Lead+Learn Press (2011). In addition to these publications, Thommie has authored over a dozen chapters and articles for publications including ASCD, Corwin, and Lead+Learn Press. Her recent publications have focused on supporting teachers and leaders with Common Core State Standards implementation and providing structures for increasing text complexity.
Thommie and her husband, William, share the pleasures of four children. They and their St. Bernard live along the Shenandoah River in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Harpers Ferry National Historic Park where they enjoy tubing, reading, writing, dancing, and rich conversations.
