Digging Deeper into the Common Core State Standards: Going Beyond Awareness to Implementation

Join The Leadership and Learning Center’s “Common Core State Standards U.S. Tour” including nationally renowned experts, practitioners, and knowledge leaders!
This two day event will provide solutions that will not only help you learn, but will also help you apply and implement the standards in your district or school. By going deeper into the common core, participants will be given the tools necessary to align all of their work, from the classroom to the boardroom. Teachers, principals, and central office staff will not only learn how to implement and support the common core in their districts, they will also learn from people from all over the country.
To date, nearly 90% of American students live in states with the common core. A rare and wonderful opportunity exists for educators to network nationwide to bring the common core to life across the country.
As a Result of Attending the Two Day Common Core Event, Participants will be Able to:
- Make the connection between practices in standards, assessment, data analysis, accountability, and instruction.
- Apply understandings of assessment literacy and know the differences and similarities between formative and summative assessments while using them in the classroom.
- Utilize strategies for aligning Common Core State Standards and instruction with assessments.
- Develop a plan for integrating the standards of English Language Arts or mathematical practices.
- Articulate the steps in the Rigorous Curriculum Design process, and apply this theory to practice through the use of Common Core State Standards.

Along with the Common Core State Standards comes a significant increase in the levels of rigor needed in our instruction. This session will provide information for educators wanting to know how to support all students in moving toward meeting these cognitively demanding standards. Participants will examine several ways to “ramp up” instructional planning to target the higher levels of rigor called for in the Common Core State Standards and the next-generation assessments. |

Teachers need the tools to inspire student learning that results in improved achievement. Standards-based performance assessment is an effective means to improve student performance in the classroom and on high-stakes standardized tests. It is even more meaningful when using the targeted standards provided through the Common Core. Participants will learn why performance tasks, with accompanying rubrics for assessing student proficiency, are so powerful. In addition to beginning to design a standards-based performance assessment ready for use in the classroom, participants will receive practical tools for effective standards implementation. |

Literacy as a Shared Responsibility: Reading and Research (Part One) — Angela Peery The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy demand that every educator plays a critical role in creating highly literate students. This breakout session will examine the reading expectations in depth, with attention paid to how instruction in both English language arts and in other courses must change. Specifically, the following topics will be highlighted:

Merging Mathematical Skills with Mathematical Practices through the Common Core State Standards (Part One) — Rachel Syrja The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice are essential components in developing the mathematical understanding of students. Educators must intentionally provide students opportunities to use the mathematical practices to foster their understanding. This session will allow educators to dig deeply into the mathematical practices as well as looking at the design and organizational features of the entire document. The following topics will be discussed in the breakout sessions:
Reflection opportunities and action planning will be incorporated throughout the day.

Session 1 – Literacy as a Shared Responsibility: Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Language (Part Two) — Angela Peery In order to meet the demands of the Common Core, students must write more than ever. In particular, they must be proficient in writing detailed explanations and logical arguments. Along with the focus on these types of writing comes the expectation that students will also engage in various types of collaborative learning groups and oral presentations. Directly related to both speaking/listening and writing is the detailed focus on language conventions at each grade level. This breakout will explore these topics, highlighting the following specifics:

Please mention the Leadership and Learning Center to get the discounted rate of $149.00. Rooms will only be available at the discounted rate until September 15, 2012 or when the block of rooms sells out, whichever comes first. If the room block does sell out, we will do our best to find a hotel near the training location at a comparable rate. Please note that you are responsible for making your own hotel reservations. The Embassy Suites does not accept purchase orders as payment.
The Embassy Suites is located approximately 6 miles from the Des Moines International Airport and the hotel does not provide complimentary shuttle service from the airport. Taxis are available for approximately $20 each way. Self-parking is available for $7.00 per day and valet parking is $19.00 per day.

Cancellations and Substitutions
By submitting an online registration you are agreeing to pay the registration fee regardless of the payment method specified at time of submission and you agree to this Cancellation and Substitution policy. You must cancel in writing. The Center does not give refunds. If you cancel more than 30 days in advance of the conference, The Center will apply 100% of the tuition to your Center account for future purchases of our products or services. If you cancel fewer than 30 days in advance of the conference, The Center will apply a tuition credit to your Center account, less a cancellation fee of 50% of the conference tuition.
