Getting Ready for the Common Core: What Teachers, Administrators, and Educational Leaders Need to Know Now — Douglas B. Reeves

 

In this session, Dr. Reeves will provide resources to identify the common core and to support implementation of the Common Core. Dr. Reeves will focus on practical classroom issues and how second language and learning disabled students are impacted. He will concentrate on learning from the past and mistakes to avoid when implementing standards. Reeves will discuss the time pressures for teachers and how standards should be looked at as a floor and not a ceiling for students’ achievement.

Considering both the requirements of the Common Core and the lessons of history, Douglas Reeves will consider both leadership mistakes and essential leadership practices as educational systems prepare for the Common Core at every level, from the classroom to the boardroom.

Design and Organization of the ELA Common Core

As a result of this session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the ELA Common Core State Standards and Appendices. Participants will examine three learning progressions and consider how the design and organizational features of the Common Core State Standards promote:

  • Focus and coherence for instruction and assessment
  • Access and acceleration

Structure of the Mathematics Common Core — Angela Peery
 

As a result of this session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the design and organization of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Participants will examine each of the three major sections of the document, along with Appendix A, to consider how the structure of the Mathematics Common Core State Standards:

  • Promotes focus, specificity, and coherence
  • Places an emphasis on mathematical practices, core concepts, and fluency with procedural skills

Creating alignments and bridging the gaps from your current state standards to the Common Core State Standards will be essential for success. During this session, participants will have an opportunity to explore processes, tools, and resources to support the implementation of the CCSS.

The Sheraton is approximately 18 miles from the Lambert International Airport. The hotel recommends Go Best Express Shuttle for approximately $37 each way. Taxis are also available for approximately $45 each way. Complete information on the discounted hotel room rate will be included in your confirmation email.

If you would like a printed copy to reference throughout the conference, please download and print the PDFs in advance from www.corestandards.org/the-standards, and bring them with you to the event.

Cancellations and Substitutions

By submitting an online registration you are agreeing to pay the registration fee regardless of the payment method specified at time of submission and you agree to this Cancellation and Substitution policy. You must cancel in writing. The Center does not give refunds. If you cancel more than 30 days in advance of the conference, The Center will apply 100% of the tuition to your Center account for future purchases of our products or services. If you cancel fewer than 30 days in advance of the conference, The Center will apply a tuition credit to your Center account, less a cancellation fee of 50% of the conference tuition.
