Participants will examine their data and make leadership and instructional decisions within the framework of a proven and effective process. The six-step data-driven decision making process includes: Treasure Hunt, Analysis and Prioritization of Needs, SMART Goals, Identifying Strategies, Determining Results Indicators, and Planning for Monitoring and Evaluation. Each step will take participants deeper into new systems of thinking and applications of data. During the seminar participants will examine their own real data on real students so that the process is presented and understood in context. By the conclusion of day one, participants will have learned the process and made concrete improvement decisions about their district or school.

Day two will focus on how to implement data-driven decision making at the classroom practitioner level. Data teaming takes the struggle out of working with data by clearly and specifically identifying areas of student need; at the same time, it reduces the isolation of teachers by encouraging effective collaboration, empowering data team leaders and others who serve as the key support persons for data team leaders. Facilitators of the team meeting can be teachers, academic coaches, or administrators who create the agenda, monitor time, listen, and help move the team through the data process as it relates to their grade level and individual as well as group academic needs. Day two is key for success in applying the data process.

What to bring: Two years of state and/or district test data, other district student assessment data, classroom or grade-level assessment data, statistical data, and previous year’s goals.

Who is this seminar designed for?

This two-day seminar is designed for classroom teachers who will serve as data team leaders, principals, assistant principals, central office curriculum and instruction leaders, superintendents, assistant superintendents, and board members.

What are the LEARNING OBJECTIVES?

Participants will examine data to identify leadership and instructional decisions within the framework of a proven and effective process. The six-step decision making for results process includes:

  • Analysis and Prioritization of Needs
  • SMART Goals

The Research

The value of the data emerges only when analysis provides insights that direct decisions for students.

  • Stephen White, Show me the proof! Tools and Strategies to Make Data Work for You. Beyond the Numbers: Making Data Work for Teachers & School Leaders, 2005.
  • Douglas Reeves, The Leaders Guide to Standards: A Blueprint for Educational Equity and Excellence, 2002.

According to author Robert Marzano as cited in What Works in Schools: Translating Research Into Action (2003): “One of the defining characteristics of schools producing unprecedented gains in student achievement is that they rely on data to identify probably successful interventions”

“Mere collegiality will not cut it.  Discussions about curricular issues or popular strategies can feel good but go nowhere.  The right image to embrace is of a group of teachers who meet regularly to share, refine, and assess the impact of lessons and strategies continuously to help increasing numbers of students learn at higher levels.” -Mike Schmoker, “On Common Ground” The Power of Professional Learning Communities, 2005.
