Invigorate Your Mind – Fresh Ideas for Senior Leaders

Senior leaders must always have an eye on the horizon to stay ahead of the changing demands that will face them in the coming years. Being “ahead of the curve” is what successful superintendents know will keep their districts moving forward, enable them to be responsive to their Boards, and assist them in building capacity of everyone around them. Join colleagues from across the country and Dr. Douglas Reeves, founder of the Leadership and Learning Center, as well as nationally recognized speakers Cathy Lassiter, Ainsley Rose, and Steve Ventura in a conversation about how to lead schools through the pressures and challenges of educating children in modern times. Superintendents and senior leaders will gain insights on emerging topics such as:

  • Redesigning the work of central office to improve student learning
  • Building a learning organization from the boardroom to the classroom
  • Creating a succession plan to sustain the work
  • Maximizing the potential of every staff member

The learning environment will be kept small to allow for one on one and whole group discussions and deep thinking about the why and how of the featured topics. Leaders will also participate in a world café with colleagues and the presenters. Thought provoking questions will be posed by a facilitator to small table groups which will engage leaders in deeper thinking about the content from the sessions. Registration for this unique learning opportunity will be limited so reserve your place today.

Data and Accountability: Critical Friends to Senior Leaders – Steve Ventura

We have come a long way in using data to drive the decisions we make in schools. But many districts still struggle with making a connection between what the data tells us about student achievement and the actions of adults that precede the student results. Steve Ventura will share specific strategies and provide examples on how to chart a path to success by making this critical link and following through on the practices that lead to improved student learning.

Building a Learning Organization from the Boardroom to the Classroom – Cathy Lassiter

What does it take to create a culture where every level of the organization is learning and improving? Senior leaders are the only ones in the district capable, by virtue of their position and authority, of creating and sustaining a system-wide leaning culture. This culture must be modeled by those in the central office first. Using the most current research on transforming central offices, participants will explore changes that will make their central offices models for the schools. Participants will also learn what actions will result in moving their entire districts from talking about being a learning organization to acting as a learning organization.

Unlock the Hidden Potential of Your People – Ainsley Rose

During this session, senior leaders will analyze how well they are doing at maximizing the potential of every employee in their care. Do people give 110 percent at work? If not, what is stopping them from doing so? Ainsley Rose will share current research on motivation, culture, and the human spirit. Leaders who understand and work the human element into the goals of the district will see greater commitment and engagement of everyone, which will result in learning gains for students.

The Leadership Pipeline: Succession Planning for Sustaining the Work – Steve Ventura

In order to sustain great work and momentum towards a goal, leadership must be developed at every level of an organization. Participants will examine how they currently recruit, grow, and retain educators with high potential to become school and central office administrators. Research clearly shows that the baby boomers are retiring in large numbers. Many district leaders are ill- prepared to replace experienced, competent leaders with people who can keep the work going. Steve Ventura will share information on succession planning in education and help leaders think about how to make this effort part of their work for the coming year.

11:30 a.m.—12:30 p.m.

Lunch (provided)

12:30 p.m.—2:00 p.m.

World Café – Cathy Lassiter

To top off the two days of learning, leaders will participate in a world café with their peers. During the world café, participants will select tables with provocative questions related to the content from the sessions. There will be a facilitator to record thoughts, conclusions, and questions from the table group, and then the groups will change tables. This activity allows senior leaders to go deeper in their thinking about what they have learned, and work with peers on applying their knowledge to the challenges they face in the district. Groups will rotate at least three times, and information will be shared whole-group for reaction and reflection.

Action Planning Time & Closure: Bringing Accountability, Ownership, and Empowerment Together To Get Ahead of the Curve – Ainsley Rose

This closing session will bring together the main points from the sessions on accountability, ownership, and empowerment, and encourage leaders to personalize the new learning in the form of an action plan to take back. Armed with the insights and information from conversations during the world café, personal notes, handouts from the sessions, and expertise from the facilitators, senior leaders will be equipped to create plans that will put them ahead of the curve in the coming year.
