Writing to Learn 3: Assessing Non-Fiction Writing

What are the BENEFITS of this seminar?

Participants will walk away with:

  • Increased understanding of collaborative rubric scoring (through practice in the seminar)
  • A draft of a common rubric for writing, ready for immediate implementation
  • A training manual and CD with additional resources, including student samples of writing

The focus of this one-day seminar is the accurate scoring of cross-curricular student writing so that effective feedback is given to students, resulting in increased proficiency. A discussion of the qualities of writing (content, organization, conventions, and style) will be framed in terms of the state's standards and rubrics. Any applicable state writing rubrics will be "unwrapped," and student writing samples will be scored collaboratively. All participants will leave with drafts of common rubrics to be used at their school sites and action plans for collaborative scoring. This seminar is intended for teachers and instructional leaders who are currently using writing across the curriculum effectively and who want to create collaborative scoring structures. For educators who are not yet widely using nonfiction writing across the curriculum, Seminar 2 (Instructional Strategies) is a prerequisite.

Who should attend? Teachers of grades 3 and up, in all subject areas (with ample preparation time, the seminar can be customized to include K-2 teachers). Teachers, teacher-leaders, instructional coaches, and administrators who have ample experience in teaching writing and/or who wish to implement collaborative scoring of writing.

What are the LEARNING OBJECTIVES of this seminar:

  • A deeper understanding of state, district, and/or local writing rubrics
  • Creation of a common rubric to be used for collaborative scoring
  • Strengthened ability to score student writing samples by way of practice and feedback
