Writing To Learn: The Reading Connection is a one-day seminar that focuses on the link between effective reading of nonfiction text and the writing of nonfiction in various forms. Strategies for helping students interact with text, get "unstuck" while reading, and tackle new content-area vocabulary will be highlighted. This seminar is most appropriate for teachers of grades 4-12; a discussion of the fundamentals of reading is not included. It is not necessary to have participated in the other Writing To Learn seminars to attend this seminar. For more advanced work in teaching vocabulary, this seminar pairs very effectively with Vocabulary for Academic Success.

Who should attend? Teachers, teacher-leaders, instructional coaches and administrators, Grades 4-12. The content can be adapted, with ample prior notice, to include grades 2 and 3.

What are the LEARNING OBJECTIVES of this seminar:

  • Teaches strategies that all teachers can use with their content-area material
  • Specific information about adolescent literacy and text structures that are often found in textbook reading will be examined
