Leadership Performance Matrix

A Means for Effective Leadership Evaluation
and Formative Feedback for Improvement

Consistent with national and international research and
standards, Dr. Douglas Reeves developed the Leadership
and Performance Matrix as an educational leadership
assessment tool that facilitates growth and effectiveness in order to support teaching excellence and student learning.

Dimensions of the Leadership
Performance Matrix

  • Resilience
  • Personal Behavior and Professional Ethics
  • Student Achievement
  • Decision Making
  • Communication
  • Faculty Development
  • Leadership Development
  • Time/Task/Project Management
  • Technology
  • Personal Professional Learning

The Leadership Performance Matrix addresses fundamental limitations of most leadership evaluation systems today. First, they are infrequent and untimely, typically conducted at the end of the school year or the end of a contract term, when feedback is too late for leaders to change behaviors or make improvements. Additionally, leadership evaluation has traditionally been subjective and ambiguous. The Leadership Performance Matrix provides continuous formative assessment for leaders at every level, including building administrators, central office leaders, and senior leaders at the district and state level.

The Leadership Performance Matrix provides the tools to support a new vision for leadership assessment and coaching that is formative, constructive, and unambiguous.

  • Provides consistent, clear, and fair definitions of leadership performance
  • Documents judgments about leadership performance through supporting evidences
  • Offers continuous and effective feedback for veteran, new, and aspiring leaders
  • Supports collaborative processes and collegial conversations that are essential for sustainable Professional Learning Communities
  • Promotes observations and evaluations as part of a holistic learning system that develops leadership effectiveness

The Center also partners with Learning Sciences International to support implementation of the Marzano and Danielson teacher effectiveness frameworks, as well as the technology platform, iObservation.
