Power Strategies for Effective Teaching
Power Strategies for Effective Teaching are the instructional strategies that educators employ to significantly and quickly raise academic achievement in all subject areas. In combination with the careful examination of student work and frequent collaboration among teachers, widespread implementation of these Power Strategies can produce dramatic results.
The Power Strategies for Effective Teaching seminar synthesizes decades of credible and documented research. This interactive seminar allows participants to experience some of the strategies before determining how to apply each one to their unique teaching situations. Participants will also learn a specific “unwrapping” protocol to apply to the analysis of student work and will connect specific strategies to evidence found in the work. We will discuss various forms of teacher collaboration, including Data Teams, in connection with each chosen strategy.
Learning Objectives:
In this seminar, participants will:
- Learn the considerable research base backing the “power” strategies
- Understand the links between the analysis of student work, selection of strategies, and gains in academic achievement
- Learn and apply an “unwrapping” protocol for analyzing student work
- Apply understanding of power strategies in three categories (activating knowledge, engaging the learner, and strengthening literacy) to one’s personal teaching situation via an action plan
Compelling Questions:
- How can teachers better activate learning, engage their students, and strengthen literacy across the curriculum through the use of key instructional strategies?
- Which instructional strategies have the greatest potential to enhance achievement?
- How can teachers select the best instructional strategies for any given learning situation?
- How can strengths and weaknesses evident in student work influence the selection of instructional strategies?
- How can a collaborative process among teachers be used to inform the selection of instructional strategies?
Answer:
Find out the answers to these questions and more at the Power Strategies for Effective Teaching Seminar.
What Are the BENEFITS the Power Strategies for Effective Teaching Seminar?
- Participants will examine approximately 15 instructional strategies that have been proven over time to have immediate positive impact on student learning
- Teachers, teacher-leaders, instructional coaches, and building-level administrators will learn how to refine their collaborative processes and structures to better inform the selection of effective instructional strategies so that those strategies can be implemented on a larger scale
- Participants will experience using a protocol for examination of student work and will determine how to connect this protocol with the selection of appropriate strategies
