At the beginning of the 2010–2011 school year, the Des Moines Public School District (DMPS) in Iowa formed a partnership with The Leadership and Learning Center to assist in developing a comprehensive academic accountability plan. DMPS, the largest school district in the state of Iowa, serves over 30,000 urban students, from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Approximately 67 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. In addition, half of the students stem from minority backgrounds, with approximately 15 percent being English language learners (ELL).
The Next Critical Step: Developing Shared Leadership Across Schools and Districts

MNPS employs more than 10,000 certificated and support staff. Under the direction of Dr. Jesse Register, the district has implemented MNPS Achieves, a comprehensive, aggressive reform initiative designed to transform identified areas of need to close the achievement gap.
