At the beginning of the 2010–2011 school year, the Des Moines Public School District (DMPS) in Iowa formed a partnership with The Leadership and Learning Center to assist in developing a comprehensive academic accountability plan. DMPS, the largest school district in the state of Iowa, serves over 30,000 urban students, from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Approximately 67 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. In addition, half of the students stem from minority backgrounds, with approximately 15 percent being English language learners (ELL).
After studying leadership in the field of education for nearly 40 years, it is always refreshing to find new and more powerful research that supports the important roles that leaders play in improving the educational performance of both staff and students. As reported by Louis et al. (2010), there have recently been more than ten large-scale quantitative and qualitative studies reporting positive effects that leadership can have on student outcomes.

The Leadership and Learning Center offers the Advanced Implementation of Response to Instruction as an innovative seminar that takes RtI to a rigorous level of training that helps states, districts, and schools implement RtI in a manner that will help close the achievement gaps for students.
